ACO Hong Kong Residency

Posted on 11 Nov 2015 by Cristina Maldonado

We’ve arrived in Hong Kong for our final international concert dates of the year! But it’s not just your standard concert program that we’re offering up this time. We’re in Hong Kong for a residency between 11 & 14 November that encompasses the broad spectrum of the ACO’s creative output.

First up, it’s ACO Underground, our experimental spin-off which sees ACO regulars perform with guitarist Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil), bassist Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes) and soprano, Katie Noonan. Under the direction of ACO Underground’s director, front-woman, violinist and singer, Satu Vänskä, the band will play a set that stretches from Bach and Purcell to Nine Inch Nails and Neil Finn. The show is on at the PMQ in Soho on 12 November.

Next up, Illuminated is a collaboration between the ACO and Sydney Dance Company with soprano Katie Noonan - a trio of dance pieces created by SDC’s artistic director and choreographer, Rafael Bonachela, set to the compositions of Benjamin Britten, Vivaldi, JS Bach, and Rameau. It takes place over two nights at the Kwai Tsing Theatre on 13 and 14 November.

Then there’s ACO Virtual – our world-first interactive installation that lets audiences immerse themselves in the ACO’s 360-degree virtual orchestra experience. You can step inside the performance, take control or even play with the musicians. ACO Virtual is on at Kwai Tsing Black Box Theatre from 11 to 14 November.

ACO VIRTUAL installation will be on from 11 until 14 Nov at Black Box Theatre, Kwai Tsing Theatre.

ACO musicians will also undertake Education activities with local students from the Academy of Performing Arts, and they’re also leading some string workshops with secondary school students inside ACO Virtual itself!

All these activities form part of our Hong Kong residency, a new model of international touring that combines varied public performances with educational activities and engagement with local communities. It is hoped that this residency will give us the chance to show many different aspects of the ACO, and to leave a much longer-lasting impression on Hong Kong.
