Listen: Festive Season playlist

Posted on 12 Dec 2016 by Cristina Maldonado

Immerse yourself in the festivities with our Festive Season playlist! ACO staff and musicians pick their favourite songs for the holidays, reflecting on happy family memories and music that brings them together from afar.

1) Peter Combe - Happy Christmas to You

"When I was a little boy my family had this cassette tape and it would come out every Christmas (actually, for most of December) and it just brings back such happy memories of my family all being together in the humid North Queensland heat!" Glenn Christensen (Violin)

2) Tony Bennett & Amy Winehouse - Body and Soul

"This is one of my father's favourite songs, and especially at this time of the year, when I'm away from my family, listening to it brings me closer to them." Maja Savnik (Violin)

3) Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - Jingle Bells

"Our family has very happy memories of being together in Sydney listening to the whole album, especially this track. My 4-year old niece later learnt to imitate the throat singing with all the inflections which of course had us in stitches!" Helena Rathbone (Principal Violin)

4) Beethoven - Symphony No 9

"It’s a much-loved and very popular tradition to perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (nicknamed “Daiku”) every December in Japan, and I fondly recall playing and hearing it at this time every year, everywhere!" Aiko Goto (Violin)

5) Tim Minchin - White Wine in the Sun

"Once, on a cold and dreary December day while still working in London, we were listening to a festive playlist full of wintery songs, when Tim’s touching tribute to celebrating Australian Christmas from afar came on. I caught the eye of the other Aussie in the office and we shared a bittersweet homesick tear and smile. Suddenly family didn’t seem so far away!" Anna Melville (ACO's Artistic Administrator)
