Two World Premieres of a Different Kind

Posted on 27 Sep 2016 by Cristina Maldonado

Changing concert repertoire at the last minute is something that an Orchestra strives to avoid whenever possible; the ACO is no exception. But sometimes circumstances conspire to upset our careful planning, and sometimes the reasons are too wonderful to be disappointed at all.

The ACO Soloists’ performances in Sydney on 16 October and Perth on 19 October were planned to feature the World Premiere of a new piece by the ACO’s good friend Elena Kats-Chernin, ‘Singing Trees’, composed especially for four of our musicians and their remarkable instruments, including Maxime Bibeau and his Gasparo da Salò double bass.

However, Max will have his hands busy with more than his double bass for the foreseeable future, as he and his partner Melissa were overjoyed to welcome the early arrival of twin boys, Luc and Rémy, on Saturday 24 September.

As premiering ‘Singing Trees’ would be impossible without Max, it has been delayed till our later concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 7 December. The replacement work for the October concerts will be Vivaldi's Cello Concerto in E minor, RV409, a piece that presents interesting patterns of tempo shifts.

Our thanks to Elena for her understanding and support while our love and best wishes go to Max, Melissa and family.
