Julian Thompson talks about Mountain and ACO’s previous multimedia creations

Julian Thompson recording the music for Mountain.

To be involved in the genesis of some of ACO's multimedia creations has been quite a ride! I remember back in 2007, not long after I'd joined the orchestra, Richard cornered me and said something along the lines of "Right! We're off to King Island with a bunch of surfers and alternative surf-craft. Bring a wetsuit and your electric cello!" That was the beginning of Musica Surfica.

Our most recent intersection between music and film The Reef, has toured around Australia and also the US, UK and Hong Kong. Following this project, Richard started exploring ideas and concepts in a new arena – mountains - and I suggested he get in touch with the director/producer Jennifer Peedom.

Jen is a great mate (one of my wife's best friends since way back), and she's created some incredible material including the powerful documentaries Sherpa, Solo and Miracle on Everest. I'd been involved in some of these documentaries, recording the solo cello material, and I thought that her keen intellect and attention to narrative structure would marry perfectly with Richard's deep musical insight and his openness to explore new expressive combinations and permutations. The fruits of this collaboration are going to be truly exceptional.
