There's a Sea in my Bedroom

On at Pier 2/3 (13-17 July), and touring regionally to venues in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. 

Weaving together stories and live music, ACO Family Shows offer an inspirational introduction to classical music. With newly commissioned music by some of Australia’s most acclaimed composers, and performed by some of Australia’s finest musicians, these children’s productions will be sure to ignite a lifelong love of music and the performing arts.

BASED ON THE BOOK BY MARGARET WILD, ILLUSTRATED BY JANE TANNER

David is frightened of the sea. He does not like it at all, not one bit. But one day he finds a conch shell at the beach and takes it home – and he hears the sea trapped inside. “Come out, sea, come out,” he says softly. “I won’t hurt you.”

Based on the beloved children’s book by award-winning author Margaret Wild, adapted for the stage by Tim McGarry, There’s a Sea in my Bedroom is an immersive and theatrical introduction to live classical music, capturing the magic of a child’s fantasy world.

Returning to the stage following a sell-out Sydney Opera House premiere season in 2019, this exquisite performance weaves together captivating storytelling with a specially commissioned score from Australian composer Paul Stanhope, performed live by an ACO string quintet. David is played by Jack Richardson.

We are proud to present this beautifully reimagined story which promises to bring moments of joy, sadness, fear, magic, and laughter.

Recommended for ages 2–8

Performances are approximately 25–30 minutes, followed by an interactive “meet the musicians” session. Children aged 0-23 months at the time of a performance may be seated on a parent’s lap free of charge. All children occupying a seat or aged 2 years of age must hold a valid ticket.
