Indies and Idols on ABC Classics

Australian Chamber Orchestra releases Indies & Idols

ACO's latest recording on ABC Classic is out now.

Indies and Idols is a mind-bending, ear-twisting, richly rewarding musical experience like few others.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra is, by any standards, one of the wonders of the musical world, famous for its dynamic, wide-reaching programs that explore the links between old and new worlds. With Indies & Idols, the ACO takes us on a rapturous ride through the music of Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, The National’s Bryce Dessner, and American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, performed alongside the sources of their inspiration: the 20th-century Polish musical geniuses Witold Lutosławski and Krzysztof Penderecki.

Responding to a century of turmoil and innovation, some of it incredible, much of it terrible beyond words, these composers came to question the very nature of music itself, moving beyond the accepted limits of harmony and sonority yet also drawing on the melodic clarity and beauty of folk music.

Indies & Idols is a program about musical inheritance, inheritance over time and across boundaries that may be more porous than they first appear.
