Many musicians, including the string players of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, carry precious keepsakes in their instrument cases.
Tucked safely alongside precious violins, violas, cellos and basses are photos of loved ones, sentimental cards and gifts, and other interesting bits and pieces that keep them company while they are away from home.
Each time the musicians open their cases, they see warm reminders of days gone by with the people they love, and feel buoyed for the performances ahead.
ACO Principal Viola Stefanie Farrands shares pictures that reveal the true loves of her life.
1. My precious Ragnar Hayn viola
“My most precious thing,” Stef says.
2. Viola cover, made by my mum when I was 15
“This little viola bag is a gift my mum made when I had just swapped to the viola when I was 15 or 16 years old, and every time I pull my viola out, I’m reminded of my mum.”
3. Strings, rosin, mutes and cloths
All the essentials for any string player.
4. The first sock of my best friend’s son, Gideon
Inside the small bag where Stef keeps her mutes is also a very special little keepsake: “I have a best friend who lives in Berlin,” Stef shares. “And in this little bag I have the first sock of her son Gideon, which reminds me they’re always with me even though they live on the other side of the world.”
5. Tasmanian Oyster Catchers
A picture of a place close to Stef’s heart.
6. A Leunig Carton, featuring a viola player
“…and a teapot, which brings me immense joy! Tea is my big love in life.”
7. A picture of Mitch
“My incredible husband is always there with me, for every concert.”
8. A card from my mum
“And a message that says ‘tea makes everything better’”.
