Theme & Variations has been a proud sponsor and supporter of the Australian Chamber Orchestra since 2001, providing pianos for the Orchestra's rehearsals and performances, and offering expert piano tuning services across our venues and spaces. It’s a collaboration built on shared values: a commitment to excellence, the nurturing of Australian musical talent, and a deep respect for the instruments at the heart of the artform.
At the centre of this enduring partnership was Ara Vartoukian OAM, founder and director of Theme & Variations and one of Australia's most highly-regarded concert technicians. Ara’s expertise, passion, and generosity helped shape the quality of piano performance heard in concert halls across the country. A master craftsman and mentor to many, Ara passed away in April 2024, leaving a lasting legacy not only as a technician but as a true patron of music in Australia.
To honour his memory, the ACO has unveiled a dedicatory plaque on our Studio piano, SD1, which will now and always be known as “The Ara”,
“The Ara” took centre stage during our rehearsals of ACO National Tour, Gershwin & Shostakovich, featuring internationally-renowned pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk – a long-time friend of Ara and Nyree Vartoukian. It’s a fitting tribute that Alexander, an artist who shares such a close personal connection with Ara and Nyree, will rehearse and perform on the newly named piano.
Theme & Variations began in 1985, when Ara, having already established a reputation as a master technician and lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, opened a piano services business in Sydney. From humble beginnings in tuning and repairs, the company quickly grew into a trusted name across the country. Today, Theme & Variations offers a full suite of services including piano sales, hire, restorations, a music school, and an in-demand team of technicians servicing the east coast of Australia.
Beyond the business, Ara and Nyree Vartoukian have made an enduring impact through their philanthropy and education initiatives offering invaluable performance opportunities and career pathways to orchestras and Australia’s next generation of musicians.
For over two decades, Theme & Variations Piano Services has helped the ACO bring music to life. The installation of The Ara in our Studio is a small but deeply heartfelt gesture to honour a man whose life’s work has touched so many. As we look to the future, the ACO is proud to continue partnering with Theme & Variations, united by a passion for excellence and a deep belief in the transformative power of music.
