ACO Up Close: Le Gateau Chocolat in Raw Cacao
25 November 2025
Performance Info
ACO Principal cellist Timo-Veikko ‘Tipi’ Valve directs AYO Momentum Ensemble in a program that masterfully intertwines his Finnish heritage and Australian experience. Jaakko Kuusisto’s Wiima evokes the nostalgic charm of Sysmä, a Finnish town dear to Tipi’s childhood, while Crystalline, by the Australian composer Olivia Bettina Davies, shimmers with delicate textures.
The centrepiece of the program is Tipi’s own arrangement for cello and strings of Schubert’s beloved Arpeggione Sonata where his 1616 Brothers Amati cello will sing with warmth and lyricism. The concert culminates with the introspective strains of Sibelius’s Voces intimae interspersed with select movements from Peter Sculthorpe’s dark String Quartet No. 8, weaving together Finnish and Australian traditions into a captivating tapestry.
An evening of musical depth and exquisite beauty not to be missed.
