Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), the training ground for the musical leaders of tomorrow, presents a special performance of French chamber music paired with the latest Australian sounds in this one-off concert this September.
“Performing at The Neilson is a fantastic opportunity for our ANAM musicians, and we wanted to make the most of it by presenting a program with music that is special to us at this point in time.” says ANAM Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen.
In the mid-twentieth century, France was the centre of the musical world: the unrivalled Pierre Boulez burned his own path and celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth we perform one of his most enthralling pieces, Messagesquisse for seven cellos. On the other hand, the music of Germaine Tailleferre was overshadowed by her male compatriots and she is only posthumously receiving the limelight she deserves.
Richard Meale’s Incredible Floridas bridges France and Australia, fusing his trailblazing avant-garde style with Arthur Rimbaud’s poetry. Two works commissioned as part of the ANAM Set take us to present-day Australia. Composer and violinist Erkki Veltheim’s Heiligenschein and a world premiere from Sydney-based composer Jane Sheldon showing us how alive and ever-changing this musical tradition is.
