Join tenor Andrew Goodwin and pianist Young Kwon Choi for a deeply moving recital of Romantic song spanning German Lieder and Russian Romance. The program opens with Robert Schumann’s masterpiece Dichterliebe, a cycle of sixteen songs set to Heinrich Heine’s poetry. With Dichterliebe, Schumann traces the arc of ecstatic love, betrayal, and resigned sorrow with unparalleled psychological insight and melodic beauty.
Following the interval, four early songs by Gustav Mahler from Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugendzeit offer a youthful counterpoint. Settings of poems by Richard Leander (Frühlingsmorgen and Erinnerung) and Molina (Serenade and Phantasie from Don Juan) evoke spring’s renewal, tender memory, and romantic fantasy in Mahler’s fresh, imaginative style.
The evening concludes with seven of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most cherished romances. From the gentle awakening of spring and the excitement of the ballroom to the quiet pain of loneliness and heartfelt pleas, these Russian songs display Tchaikovsky’s gift for lyrical melody and profound emotional expression. Together, the works create a powerful dialogue between two great Romantic traditions.
