At the edge of the horizon - behind me is the dark…
Explore vast liminal spaces and be encompassed by what lies in between with Ensemble Apex’s daring new project Behind Me Is The Dark. Collaborating with lighting designer Andre Vanderwert, Apex presents four bold modern works exploring time and texture through sound and light. Brigitta Muntendorf’s explosive Shivers on Speed opens the program, followed by homegrown star Lisa Illean’s Januaries - a memory of Australia’s hot arid landscape. Iceland’s acclaimed composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir follows with another Australian premiere in her work, Hrim, composed as a partner piece to the work that closes the concert - György Ligeti’s timeless and ground-breaking Kammerkonzert.
Heralded by Limelight as “one of the most adventurous ensembles in Sydney, performing with a maturity beyond its years”, Ensemble Apex returns in 2026 uniting some of the most exciting orchestral musicians from around Australia, building on their reputation for electric performances of some of the most unusual and exciting repertoire from the orchestral literature.
The concert will be conducted by Apex’s Artistic Director, Sam Weller, and the ensemble is led by long-time collaborator, Anna da Silva Chen.
