I am saddened to announce that director, violinist and composer Patricia Kopatchinskaja has withdrawn from the ACO's Death and the Maiden Revealed tour due to an injury. I am incredibly dismayed and disappointed that you won’t get to experience quirky Kopatchinskaja and her interpretation of Schubert’s chamber masterpiece. I understand that you will share this disappointment so please accept our sincerest apologies as we wish her well in her recovery.
In light of this development, I have been working on a new program for you. In our 50th Anniversary year, I’ve been reflecting on what it is that makes the ACO special. There are many reasons, but I keep coming back to my colleagues in the Orchestra – incredible musicians who I am privileged to share the stage with. They’re the nucleus of ACO Unleashed, a concert showcasing the unique spirit of the ACO and the incredible talent within our own ranks.
The virtuosity of Satu will shine in Ravel’s explosive showpiece, Tzigane. Helena’s musical warmth will infuse Bach’s Triple Violin Concerto, where she will be joined by Satu and our newest member, former ACO Emerging Artist, Anna da Silva Chen. Then there is the embracing musicianship of Tipi who will explore his deep Finnish roots in Jaakko Kuusisto’s incredibly moving and captivating Cello Concerto. Schubert’s Quartettsatz and my own arrangement of Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11, Op. 95 “Serioso” will bring the drama and virtuosity of the ensemble to the fore.
Building a new program, less than a month out from opening a national tour, is no easy task and while we like getting out of our comfort zone, we don’t take these changes lightly. At the end of the day, we have an unwavering commitment to giving you a transformative, unforgettable concert experience. This new program will do just that.
I thank you wholeheartedly for your understanding and support. I also thank my colleagues in the ACO, who have stepped up to prepare and perform an entirely new program with indefatigable energy and zeal. The Orchestra look forward to seeing you in the concert hall for ACO Unleashed and I look forward to seeing you in August for our Gershwin & Shostakovich tour.
