ACO Up Close: Phil Slater Quintet

Trumpeter Phil Slater’s tone slices cooly through any acoustic.

Lucky for us, he’s gathering a jazz quartet to join him in The Neilson for a one-night-only ACO Up Close performance presenting his award-winning recording, Immersion Lure.

Immersion Lure is the fourth album Phil Slater has recorded as a leader and presents a collection of new work for his jazz quintet featuring Matt Keegan, Matt McMahon, Brett Hirst, and Simon Barker.

The music expands on ideas on his previous 2019 recording, The Dark Pattern, and continues with his interest in combining the sound palette and texture of the jazz quintet instrumentation with minimalist compositional devices.

There’s nothing quite like a night of jazz in the visually-stunning, warm wood-clad Neilson concert hall.
